Teens: Do you get really nervous before reading in front of large groups of people?

Does your heart start racing really fast, feeling like it’ll fly out of your chest? I hate it so much. Surprisingly, when I begin talking, I calm down, it’s just the before part that gets to me.

All of my web searches led to individual, local groups of readers who actually meet *gasp!* physically; and these groups are invariably out of my region.

If you don’t know of a high quality classics reading group, would you like to start one with me?

I’m a Classics major and would be interested in something like that, but my cursory search has failed to show up anything either. E-mail me at jaf at reed dot edu if you find something or are maybe interested in starting up something.

I have this girl in my reading group i tries to avoid.I try to be nice but she cusses me out.How do i get away?

I want her to leave me alone. I never did nothing to her. Then she the leader of the reading group.

Tevin,it’s sad but people are mean at times. Kids especially. Just stay away from her. If she yells at you again you may need to yell back. She is a bully and thinks because you don’t say much she can pick at you.If she bullies you again turn to her and be strong. Act angry and ask her what her problem is. Fight fire with fire. Don’t say degrading(mean things about how she looks) just tell her she’s a bully and mean and she needs to leave you alone. You could quietly go to your teacher,but that could make things worse. If you do go to the teacher ask her NOT to tell the girl who said things about her.(though this girl probably picks on lots of people so she will think it;s one of the people she picks on) Good luck Tevin.

I also need an idea for my higher level group, who are reading independently at about middle of third grade level. Can you give me any suggestions for books that they will especially enjoy?
LOL Which state are you in? The state does not mandate the books we need to use in Florida.

for on-level, the marvin redpost series is great! my kids got tired of the junie b. jones books.

for your higher group, any of the ramona books would be great.

I’m creating a new reading group at my local library, however, I’ve never done this before. I’be been to others but besides knowing the following reading book, I’m never sure of the structure. Is there a structure to these things? I know essentially we just discuss the book of the month, but that can seem fairly repetative and frankly dull. Utimatly, I suppose I’m asking: Is there a particular ‘curriculum’?

is it down to how you advertise, but the major thing will be the choice of your first book.

im a single mother but feel blessed wer im from, compared to other people. here giving birth is free and i heard in the US u have to pay! hospital/medical is all free (operations n all). school is free, n in fact we get paid to go to college and university, we get a small stipend every month plus money in the beginning to buy books etc.

i went to my Mum n Baby club n was gettin so annoyed at ppl complainin about our government that they dnt giv us enough money to help, as in childrens allowance. fine its not a lot but they dnt realise that everything else is free. here things are exp, esp when it comes to baby items. im savin up for a light pushchair thats gna cost me bout 200euros but i still think its nothing to complain bout.

was i out of line to say such things for them? they gave me rly bad looks for just sayin that we should be grateful that we dont need to save thousands(!!) of pounds just to send them to school!
apricot snow girl — i dint realise that ppl get tested here for their ways of typing. this isnt a formal letter. u dint have a prob understandin it so y bother pointin it out? FYI i was kicked out of college the first yr for not attending classes, then i went in again to study but found it difficult cos my bro had just passed away tragically so i dropped out. i dint continue school but intend to once i turn 23 cos we can go in as a "mature student" with no charges.

i paid taxes for 5yrs, n worked my butt of when i was preg, right till the end. i understand bout the taxpayers paying for beneifts but i honestly aint sittin on my ass. im openin a "daycare" centre at home n gna take a course in First aid so that i can earn my own money whilst bein at home with my son (since i hv no one to leave him with.
o ye, i def disagree with mums havin to fork out loads of money to give birth!! its alrdy hard enough to bring up kids, they def dnt need to "throw away" money like that!

i still chose my own doctor n wat medication to take. i was even given a room with tv/internet/phone so its not like its a dump!

dnt get me wrong, if ur happy payin ur own way for everything fine but not all people enjoy forkin out tons of money even before the baby has arrived! we pay taxes for more than just medical etc but its still much less than if we wer to pay for everything instead!
emmas*mommy.. they do work, thats the thing. they wer complainin cos they dnt get enough allowance every 3months, aswel as a pay. they looked at me like i was some evil person for standin up for our government, who also offer that if mums go bk to wrk then they hav a yr of not payin tax (which seems fair to me)

Yea, you are very lucky and had every right to say those things to them. We have to pay $10,000 just to be healthy during prenatal care and to have the baby. Forget about once it gets here! That’s easily another $5k a year. Plus, if we want our kids to go to school without oweing a bunch of money to the government then we have to save at least $24,000 for them for college. Seriously?! They need to realize how good they’ve got it. Sheesh, wish I could be a citizen of your country!

Seems when I read the characteristics of some of the so called HATE groups, it sounds like Republicans. Are the members of these hate groups Republicans?

Yes! The republicans are owned and ran by big corporations like blue cross blue shield and haliburton. So they spread hate and fear in order to further the interests of the corporations. Like telling older people that Obamas healthcare plan will euthanize them to save money. When really
they are only trying to sustain a billion dollar machine that makes tons of money off people with cancer and other horrible diseases. They also pay people to crash these town hall meetings so that no one can voice any real opinions because of the screaming moron republican one foot away.

Right now I’m a senior

freshman year i got a 3.6 gpa and took four honors classes and one regular class

sophmore year i took 3 honor classes and three regular and a 2.8 gpa

junior i took 2 1/2 honors classes, 2 ap classes and two regular with a 3.8 gpa

senior year i am taking four ap classes and two honors and i’m getting a 3.8 so far

i got a 32 on the act
and i am a merit scholar

i have been in the animal care league, chemistry club, enviormental club, tau gamma(helping out kids after school), childrens clinic, summer program at college, two years of being on the tennis team, helped out at hospital and has two poems published in school books, and in the science fair.

I’m not sure, but to be honest, I don’t think so. I thought Ivy League schools were only looking for student with a straight 4.0 average who are in leadership programs, not just involved in extracurricular. I’ve never made below a 3.8 and the idea of me getting into Vassar or Brown is laughable — the competition is just ridiculous nowadays. But like they say, never stop trying; it could come down to your admissions essay and your SAT scores.

We were planning to start a reading and writing group for kids K-3 grade over t he summer. In this we would meet kids for 2-3 hours two times a week and learn to read and write.

Do we needto get somekind o f licence.Weplan to start it at our own house?

You would need a certificate! My mother started a thing over the summer and she got a certificate.It depends on what you do though like your doing something a bit different so you may need a license?=]

With 11 1/2 Honors classes and 6 APs in four years (that’s an average of 4+ advanced classes every year!), your weighted GPA and class rank plus the ACT score will make you very competitive at a lot of "good" schools. A more specific answer would depend on what you call a good school, what you’d like to study in college, and what non-academic things will be important to you at college.
