I’m a new teacher and I’m trying to think of some ideas to foster reading in my reading groups. I have 1 high group 2 medium groups, and a group where the students don’t really know many of their letters. I want to make sure they get the most from reading but I don’t know what kinds of activities can help the kids enjoy reading. I do sound boxes where the kids manipulate letters and create new words, we practice sentences, read our weekly story, find the main idea, and practice the letter of the week. For the lower group I am still working on letter and sound recognition (very repetitive). I’m just looking for lesson ideas that will take their learning to a higher level. Thanks for any help you can give.

For the lower group you could have students practice making the letters in a variety of ways (with playdough, writing in sand, tracing on sandpaper, writing in shaving cream, etc.) For kids who are able to read you can make "phones" with pcp pipes (straight piece with a bended piece on each end) so that when they talk into one end they can hear it in the other.
Not sure if these are helpful or not but I wish you luck!
