London, Madison County’s seat and largest community, is your quintessential rural small town with the hospitality and friendliness that you would expect from such a community.

The city was established in 1811 by Patrick McLene on land owned by John Murfin. Many believe that the English residents named the town after London, England and that its streets were designed to resemble an English neighborhood.

By 1850, London had become a center of livestock auctions attracting people from across the country.

Today, London is home to nearly 10,000 residents and has become an agropolis or micropolitan community serving a very large region.
